Cooking the Burgers
by steam: Fill up a sauce pan with just enough water that it comes close
but doesn’t touch the stove steamer. Bring the water to a nice boil and
then place your burgers in the stove steamer. Cover it and let those
burgers steam away for about 7 minutes.
Once 7 minutes is
up, move the pan to a cool burner and top each burger with a generous handful
of cheese, cover the pan again and let it sit for about 2 minutes. This
will give the cheese a chance to melt into the surface of the burger.
While this is happening, warm up your rolls by putting them in the
microwave for about 15 seconds.
Now all that’s left
to do is slather the bottom of the rolls with whatever you like – ketchup,
mustard, mayo, relish, lettuce – go crazy! Place your tender, cheesy
burger on the roll, take a bite…and realize that your grill has a
little competition from your stove top now. Steamed cheeseburgers!
Trust me.
Cooking the Hot Dogs
by steam: Use saucepan, fill the pot halfway with water, place the
steamer basket on top of the pot, add the hot dogs and cover with a lid. Cook
on high heat to boil the water and get the steam going. The dogs need to
be steaming approx. 3 minutes.
To get the color:
Position the broiler tray as high as it will go (you want it roughly 6
inches from the heating element) and broil for a few minutes, just until you
see a bit of char. Remove. Now eat.
Can steam the
veggies: Broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, asparagus, artichokes, zucchini and green beans are best.
Here's the basics
of steaming broccoli (or any vegetable, really) in the microwave.
1. Cut up the
broccoli into bite-size florets. - If you want to
eat the stalks make sure to cut them smaller
than bite-sized and remove any really woody bits so everything cooks evenly.
2. Put all the broccoli in
microwave-safe bowl and add water - For one pound of broccoli (about one head) add 2-3 tablespoons
of water.
3. Cover tightly- close the
vents. Try at 2 1/2 minutes first, then check, re-cover and put back in
if it's not done yet. May need to Microwave on HIGH (regular power) for 3-4 minutes.
4. Remove lid
carefully! Take the lid
off so it stops steaming but be careful; the steam is hot and can burn you
badly if you're not careful.
5. Sometimes we add a small pat of
butter or a splash of soy sauce before steaming. We usually add salt and pepper
after the broccoli has been cooked.
